Parents of South Korean student attend memorial on 10th anniversary of train tragedy

A decade after a South Korean student in his 20s was killed by a train while trying to rescue a stranger who fell off the platform at a station in Tokyo, the parents of the brave youngster attended a Jan. 26 memorial ceremony.

On Jan. 26, 2001, Lee Su-hyon, 26, a student at a Japanese language school in Tokyo, and Shiro Sekine, 47, a Japanese photographer, jumped off the platform at JR Shin-Okubo Station in an attempt to rescue a drunken man who fell onto the tracks. However, the three of them were hit by an incoming train and lost their lives.

“We’re proud of our son as he opened the way for Japan and South Korea to deepen their ties,” Lee’s 61-year-old mother said in a speech at the ceremony to commemorate her son held in Tokyo on the afternoon of Jan. 26.

Lee’s 71-year-old father also remarked that the 10 years have “passed so fast,” adding, “Please also remember Mr. Sekine’s humane efforts.”

The ceremony was attended by some 300 people, including Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Katsuya Okada, and messages from both Japanese and South Korean leaders were read out.A flower basket sent from Korean actor Bae Yong-joon was also displayed at the event.

At around 7:15 p.m. on the day, the time when the tragic accident occurred a decade ago, Lee’s parents offered flowers and prayed for the victims at the station.

In 2002, Lee’s parents donated the condolence money that had been collected for their deceased son to the establishment of the “LSH Asia Shogakukai,” a scholarship foundation for international students. To date, 485 students in 16 countries and regions, including China, South Korea and Vietnam, have received scholarships from the foundation.

Although this year marks the last holding of an official memorial ceremony for Lee, his parents reportedly plan to continue to attend scholarship awarding ceremonies.

She heard that BYJ had visited the restaurant before, and this time he returned with KHJ. She asked the store about KHJ, but they said, “We don’t know about Hallyu star, but little Bae Yong Joon came with him.”

During the night before the event, he unexpectedly came to his stylist’s room. He was wearing comfortable training wear and said, “This freshly made hamburger is good. Try some.” while holding a long bag in his hand.

Before his seat was arranged, he served his staff with burgers as he explained the ingredients inside of the burgers knowing the individual staff members likes and dislikes of food. He cut the burgers by himself and made sure that everyone got one. While watching the documentary on the sofa with his staff, no one spoke or moved knowing that he is “Yonsama”. With Yonsama, there wasn’t the uneasiness that others felt around most entertainers. It was comfortable because noone could feel Yonsama’s presence.

After 10 pm, Bae Yong Joon got up from his seat first. Someone from the group told me, “He is leaving to ready himself for tomorrow’s event. Oppa changes when he works.” I couldn’t tell the difference between private and public matters. But unfortunately, his name is too influential and his expections of himself are so high when he works. His work ethic is beyond imagination. Nobody will know just how hard he pushed himself that night.

The next day the number of fans increased about three or four times as many as the previous day. They started to gather at dawn. Looking down at the excited fans from his room should have made him restless. He left the hotel after 10 am. His car was moving in front of us and then suddenly stopped for a moment. There were so many people gathered on the road that the hotel employees had to regulate the traffic in the middle of the road. No accidents occurred. Bae Yong Joon’s fans have manners just like their favorite actor. Bae Yong Joon stopped his car for a moment, opened the window, waved his hand, and lowered his head.

It’s said that the capacity of the Tokyo Dome is 50,000. If Bae Yong Joon and his company focused only on the profit of the event they would have sold the seats that had no accurate view of the stage. The stage would have looked like a dot. But thanks to Bae Yong Joon, who thought that it would be meaningful if everyone was capable of enjoying the event to its full capacity, the seats were limited to 30,000. One of the more surprising matters was that all of the seats were sold at the same price: VIP seats, R seats and A seats. Tickets were also sold in slow incremements to prevent illegal ticketing. Those who were lucky enough to see him at a closer range were picked out of a drawing.

He took care of even small matters. During the rehearsal, he showed his meticulousness by checking the guests’ rehearsal scenes and their moving lines. While staying in the waiting room, he was busy showing his gratitude to the guests from Asia first; Gackt from Japan, an actor and singer Oh Geon Ho and Jeong Won Chang from Taiwan. After the photo call for the press was over, there was discussion about whether he was too formally dressed compared to the other guests. He wore a suit as he usually did but the other guests were wearing casual clothing.

Camera; For Bae Yong Joon, the camera is the same as a secret word or code. He doesn’t want to share it with others. Bae Yong Joon or Yonsama is not on the other side of the lens. It is just something that makes his heart pump.

As a host of today’s party, he continuously questioned or asked whether it would be polite to adjust to the guests’ desires. Would the audience feel the difference? Until he went up onstage, it seemed like there was no correct answer for it. He checked and checked again as he adjusted the direction of his neck-tie constantly. Behind stage, Bae Yong Joon constantly switched between feeling relaxed and stressed. He pushed himself and then relaxed continuously.

After the party began, he went up onstage about the time when the party was at its peak as guests were coming forward to gain recognition for their good deeds. He didn’t sing or dance like other guests, but the sudden screams from the audience made it seem as though he did. Bae Yong Joon brought his thin and long index finger to his lips once, opened and closed his eyes, and slowly moved his eyes towards the audience. The hall became quiet right away and even the emcees were surprised by the silence. Which artist has the ability to control the audience this well? The party on that day ended after he donated the camel color coat he wore in “Winter Sonata”, three bottles of wine which were selected by him, and the neck tie which he was wearing. Surprisingly enough, he didn’t expect to donate his tie but rather decided to donate it at a whim.

I can’t say that I saw all of Yonsama or Bae Yong Joon for the last five days, but it definitely helped me realize what kind of person he is and how he controls himself in front of the public eye. The most important thing to him is the way he approaches others, not the speed or direction.

[News] “Dream High” to end at 16th episode

by VITALSIGN @ allkpop on January 26, 2011 at 11:40 pm

The 16th episode of KBS 2TV’s “Dream High” will mark the completion of the series, and there are no plans for any special extensions.

A representative of KBS spoke with Star News on January 27th and revealed, “‘Dream High” was originally scheduled to complete its series on February 22nd, but because of the Asian Cup on January 25th, the ending has been pushed back to February 28th.”

The drama is currently enjoying viewer ratings in the upper 15%, and has been ranking first in its time slot. KBS suffered lackluster viewer ratings prior to “Dream High”, which lead many to believe that they’d go ahead and push to extend the series in response to its success. Yet representatives revealed that the cast members’ individual schedules left no choice but to end the show at the 16th episode.

Representatives further stated, “KBS and the production company discussed the issue, and decided that an extension would be out of the question. Instead, we have decided to release a special broadcast on March 1st. The special will feature a concert-style broadcast, something a bit different from the other specials.”

Watching “Dream High”
24 January 2011

Japanese to English: tomato99 @LoveBaeYongJoon

6 episodes had been aired as of 18th January.

I am one of his staff, but I get enraptured watching Yong Joon-san’s drama.(smile)

We posted Dream High posters at our office lobby, now bare lobby looks nice.

It’s wonderful to create contents that can make people happy.

However, people creating them go through a lot of trouble,,,

And I think support from people is the best thing to give them power.

Until the end of Dream High, I will support them at a viewer’s feelings rather than a staff.

That’s because my feelings are more passionate as a fan…

Behind Story of “Dream High”

(Bae Yong Joon, the charismatic actor who represents Korea.)

(Park Jin Young plays a wild and vital role in Dream High.)

(Official Mentors in Dream High)

Kim Soo Hyun: Bae Yong Joon encouraged me a lot. After the airing, he contacted me by sending text messages or telephone calls.

(Bae Yong Joon: I watched your acting. You expressed your emotions well, but not your lines.)

Eunjeong: After each episode, he encouraged me by sending text messages or advised me on my acting at the filming site. He advised me whenever he has time by saying “I watched your acting. You did very well such and such..”

(Bae Yong Joon: I watched your acting. Cheer up!)

Taecyeon: I didn’t receive any text messages.

Eunjeong: Really?

Taecyeon: I think he only sends them to girls. I don’t have his phone number and he didn’t advise me on anything.

Eunjeong: Really? He advised me and Suzy.

Taecyeon: I filmed only one scene with him. (The scene where Taecyeon caused a disturbance.) He didn’t advise me on anything.

Bae Yong Joon: Ah.. Did I? (Was I indifferent to him?)

Bae Yong Joon was handsomely wearing a suit and a smile. He was still the same as before. Comfort comes from wearing skinny jeans and a loose t-shirt and exploding in laughter at a light joke. His ability to be in this comfortable mode shows him in another light.

Tokyo. “Yonsama” is a proper noun. It is only one word and has a huge impact just by the name itself. The reason he doesn’t show up that much in public is because of all of the “bad” responsibilities of having that name. Yonsama must be more cautious when he goes out because his outings affect not only the culture but the economy too. After the first visit, he wasn’t allowed to use Haneda airport because even the airport was affected by his appearance. Haneda allowed Bae Yong Joon to use their airport for his visit back to Japan since a year and three months ago.

Is there any other event which can make Haneda’s dignity, which was remodeled recently, proud? His fans filled the big lobby and surrounded the outside of airport. This surprising scene stirred drama and was spread throughout the media just like when he had visited Japan the first time. It is Bae Yong Joon who expresses his joy by raising his hand or lowering his head as usual to his 4,000 fans.

Tokyo; For Bae Yong Joon, Tokyo is like a mailman that brings the past to the present, and sends it to the future after Tokyo regenerates itself. Bae Yong Joon was Joon Sang of “Winter Sonata”. Who will he appear as next time?

Bae Yong Joon visited Japan in order to work on the “Smile Project”, a charity event to help the children in Asia. It is a concert where celebrities from all over Asia gather and donate their favorite items. This time, Bae Yong Joon not only hosted organizing the charity party but also took the task of caring for the invited guests on stage and in the crowd. Of five days in Tokyo, only one day is scheduled as his official activity day. The following day he is unofficially scheduled to take pictures with 5,000 Japanese fans that have been selected through a drawing.

Unofficial or official scheduling aside, his concerns are focused around only one thing. The fact that people he calls family, his fans, are waiting for him is his biggest concern. His fans would wait for hours regardless of weather or place if they could meet him. The weather of December in Tokyo was cold. He refrains from going out in consideration of his fans. He knows that the best return is to show his face to his fans, but he can’t always appear for them. Therefore his private time was limited during his stay in Japan. That private time was used to eat dinner with his brother, Kim Hyun Joong, who sang the theme song of the “Smile Project”.

Smile: It looks like his eyesight can’t be budged with excuses, his tightly closed lips show strong will. But his lips and eyesight look bright and cool when he returns to the average man. He always looks like this way if he is Bae Yong Joon instead of “Yonsama”.

They had a light dinner at the ramen shop where Kim Hyun Joong always goes to whenever he visits Japan. It was a surprise to see BYJ wearing high-top shoes and skinny jeans, instead of his usual neat suit. Many people probably want to see him relaxing like this. I remember that my friend, who is in the fashion industry, saw him in Cheongdam-dong. My friend talked about his superior height wearing a padded vest and baggy pants. He is quite a fashion star. If he wasn’t wearing “official” clothing he would be wearing a bulky knitwear, blouson, skinny jeans, and walker all the time. His fashion sense is excellent, it is beyond my imagination.

He finished his tight filming schedule of the drama “Dream High” right before he got on the plane. Even though it was co-produced, it was his first experience as a producer. His appearance as a guest star was an important part in the show and allowed for a smooth transition in the story line. Moreover, he hasn’t appeared on camera for a long time so he probably spent most of his saved energy in perfecting that small but important role.

[VOD & Trans] Documentary "A Journey in Search of Korea's Beauty" Epi 2

source: suehan's blog

Before your self is empty, you must be completely fulfilled.
True completeness is not being completely fulfilled, but it is being completely empty.
You repeat yourself every year, every month, every day, every moment.

The goal of this trip is to look for the beauty in the natures of Korea.

Emptying your soul starts to see what has been filling it up.

After dismissing everything that you have been selfishly holding it, you hear the pure sounds that comes up from the dirt.

2nd Episode
Adjusting your clothes, Filling and Emptying

Chun Han Bong recreates the tea bowls from the Cho-Sun Dynasty.
Bae Yong Joon came to look for Chun Han Bong.
It is because he came to find that the tea bowls he had once bought were made by Chun Han Bong.

One winter day, Bae Yong Joon found the road to the lands of the old Cho-Sun Dynasty and started his new journey.

Bae Yong Joon helped in the first kiln production process.

Mr. Chun let Bae Yong Joon take his seat to spin the pottery.

(You place the clay on the spinner and let it start breathing)
(He starts to spin the wheel by stepping on the spinner)

"In one breath, you lift. In one breath, you open it. In one breath, you make it."

The work of bringing the dirt up and down is to not lose any of the clay.

Only be concentrating can you find the balance of the clay.

It is a task that needs me to be one with the clay. - Bae Yong Joon

( ... So you touched the bottom?)

Bae Yong Joon is quietly listening to the directions of Mr. Chun.

He did all of the jobs in the workshop that the youngest assistant would be doing.
All of the smaller jobs are done to prevent any mistakes in learning the craft.

(You enter the kiln)

All of the prepared pots go into the kiln one at a time.

The touch of the potter is gentle.

Now, only the fire and the clay are there to come together in the kiln.

Baking the clay pots again.

BYJ:"You say that the temperature can't drop. You need to keep raising the temperature in the kiln."

Chun: You need to always be by the fire. When the temperature seems like it's about to drop, you have to put in more wood. The temperature will quickly drop if it you give it any chance of going down. It is hard to bring it back up."

Increased tension between the fire and the clay until the end.

Not emptying, not changing, not letting go... the fire and clay fight in the kiln.

At a moment that not anyone can notice, the heat from the kiln is already felt on the face of Mr. Chun.
He immediately knows that it is time to add more wood.
He starts to put more wood into the kiln.

Chun:Sometimes, if you throw the wood in up above by accident, you can ruin the clay.
That's why this one piece of wood is an amazing object.

BYJ: "That's why I was so shocked when you asked me if I would want to throw in the wood."

(Now, the soot is starting to burn away. The teacher's heavy words...)

(The soot eats away at the clay, the fire gets rid of the soot and the heat rises again to create more soot)

(The soot swallows the clay, the heat erases the soot)

(Again the heat goes back up and engraves the soot - BYJ)

("Try picking one"... from the pieces that have been cooling for around an hour after leaving the kiln)

(The chance to be able to pick my own piece. How will the teacher react to the way I decide on my choice)

(There is a piece that draws me in. The pupil's hand shakes as it moves down in front of the teacher)

("You can't make something like this again." I barely pass a breath that I have been holding in - BYJ)

Chun: People these days like things that are clean and sophisticated. They don't know much about things with weight and modest. But BYJ knows this modesty.

So as Veronica followed BYJ's path, she walked into all the nooks and crannies of the lecture hall.

(In the Han-Ok) Along the narrow porch, perching down while looking out at the scenery

Bae Yong Joon has left lots of pictures of the ins and outs of the lecture hall.

(Your self and a home are different things, but a Han-Ok plays an excellent role that brings them together at an impacted midpoint.)

To Enjoy

"The Man-Yu Jeong (Pavilion) is perfect. Nature is only friends with the perfect Man-Yu Jeong."
