Parents of South Korean student attend memorial on 10th anniversary of train tragedy

A decade after a South Korean student in his 20s was killed by a train while trying to rescue a stranger who fell off the platform at a station in Tokyo, the parents of the brave youngster attended a Jan. 26 memorial ceremony.

On Jan. 26, 2001, Lee Su-hyon, 26, a student at a Japanese language school in Tokyo, and Shiro Sekine, 47, a Japanese photographer, jumped off the platform at JR Shin-Okubo Station in an attempt to rescue a drunken man who fell onto the tracks. However, the three of them were hit by an incoming train and lost their lives.

“We’re proud of our son as he opened the way for Japan and South Korea to deepen their ties,” Lee’s 61-year-old mother said in a speech at the ceremony to commemorate her son held in Tokyo on the afternoon of Jan. 26.

Lee’s 71-year-old father also remarked that the 10 years have “passed so fast,” adding, “Please also remember Mr. Sekine’s humane efforts.”

The ceremony was attended by some 300 people, including Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Katsuya Okada, and messages from both Japanese and South Korean leaders were read out.A flower basket sent from Korean actor Bae Yong-joon was also displayed at the event.

At around 7:15 p.m. on the day, the time when the tragic accident occurred a decade ago, Lee’s parents offered flowers and prayed for the victims at the station.

In 2002, Lee’s parents donated the condolence money that had been collected for their deceased son to the establishment of the “LSH Asia Shogakukai,” a scholarship foundation for international students. To date, 485 students in 16 countries and regions, including China, South Korea and Vietnam, have received scholarships from the foundation.

Although this year marks the last holding of an official memorial ceremony for Lee, his parents reportedly plan to continue to attend scholarship awarding ceremonies.
