[News]Bae Yong Joon buys a winery in Hawaii

[Joong An Il Bo] 2010.12.23 09:57

Bae Yong Joon has been known as a wine maniac and his recent movement draws attention. According to the January edition of Woman Joong Ang, Bae Yong Joon recently made an “offer”(suehan: the writer used slang that means ‘obtained or aquired’ according to Korean dictionary, but assuming from the entire article, I don’t think YJ completed the transaction, so I used the word, “offer”.) on a winery in Molokini Island in Hawaii and is currently discussing the contract. Someone related to this matter said that moving to a winery is one of Yonsama brand’s cultural project, not just a winery.

Recently Bae Yong Joon was reborn as a planner of the cultural projects from a Hallyu star. His first cultural project was “A Journey in Search of Korea’s Beauty (It is called “Hanayeo”) which was published in September of last year. “Hanayeo” is about the experiences and feelings of a Hallyu star towards a traditional culture. Until now, about 170,000 copies have been sold domestically including pre-sold copies in Japan. Its additional value increased through various expansions related to it, like the development of the travel products, the production of the documentary film, and the publishing of the English edition. Someone associated to the publishing company assessed, “The secret of success largely came from the power of Bae Yong Joon’s detailed storytelling.” Now, It is the time a culture projects can produce money right away. Looking at this standpoint, Bae Yong Joon’s “wine project” can be his second “grand” project.

Regarding Bae Yong Joon’s wine fondness, there was an article saying that “Bae Yong Joon will publish a wine travel book.” Someone close to Bae Yong Joon said, “It’s true that Bae Yong Joon is interested in wine, but there are some incorrect reports.” He will not write a wine book, but his close friend, a wine sommelier Lee Joon Hyuk is preparing to write a book and Bae Yong Joon is helping him.” It is said that Bae Yong Joon will be appearing as an interviewee in “Wine Travel (temporary name). He will appear as a guest in December and will talk about an interesting wine story which corresponds to that month.”

Last July, there was rumour that Bae Yong Joon went to a winery tour with a sommelier Lee Joon Hyuk near Molokini Island area in Hawaii. What kind of place is the winery which Bae Yong Joon made an offer on? Molokini Isalnd belongs to a volcanic zone and is famous for a pineapple wine and grape wine produced in the district. Due to its mild weather, it has an excellent condition for ripened grapes. If he buys a winery, it looks like this area might be the one. Bae Yong Joon’s agency and another entertainment company plan to co-invest in a winery business.

Someone associated to a travel agency business who has been working with Bae Yong Joon on a cultural project for years expected that, “There are some procedures that remain. If Bae Yong Joon starts a winery business, it will be a detailed and planned project which enables people to experience a wine culture in various ways.”
