[Info] The Art Museum visited by YJ in Iwate

JUN YONG BOK
Executive Director - Lacquer Artist

Entered world of lacquer art at the age of twenty. In 1988, he came to Japan to restore and create 5000 lacquer artworks of Tokyo Meguro Gajoen. While searching for the right place for his work, he came to know about Iwate Kawai district (Kawaimura). So he moved to Kawai district with 5 members of his family and 70 pupils. Currently he lives in Iwate Morioka-city and continues to work as a lacquer artist and the director of Iwayama Urushi Art Museum.

Hashimoto Gallery was built by Iwate’s own artist, Hashimoto Yaoji in purpose of studying “people’s life and beauty.” After it was closed in 2001, the lacquer artist Jun Yong Bok (current Executive Director of the gallery) who restored Tokyo Meguro Gajoen and his lacquer art study group “japan21 Iwate” requested to use the closed gallery.

Iwayama Lacquer Art Museum was reborn for exhibition and creation of lacquer artworks with many people’s passionate support. Here you can see artworks like the spectacular “Spirit of Iwate” in which Iwate’s nature, history, humanity and traditional culture are expressed.

This museum also preserves southern style horse barn which is Iwate’s cultural treasure, as it was in the former Morioka Hashimoto Gallery. From which people can see traditional style of building and various tools used in olden days.
